We are thrilled to announce that we will have a very talented musician performing for us every Second Saturday through spring and summer, saxophonist Darius Babazadeh!
Darius Babazadeh is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and music educator who has toured Asia, Europe and the USA with Paul Anka, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, Jessica Williams, Xavier Cugat, Mumbo Gumbo, Stan Lunetta, Joe Gilman and Lynard Skynyrd. After touring, Darius formed his own band called the dbaba Project.
Although we’d love to see him perform with his band, we have seen his solo work and are pleased to say it is off the charts! We got the chance to get to know him better and wanted to share our conversation with you.
Please join us every Second Saturday from 6-8pm to hear live music and enjoy some Rail Bridge Cellars wine from the best view in Sacramento! To learn more about our featured musician, please check out his website at: http://www.dbaba.com/.
Where do you find inspiration for your music?
I find it from the music that has come before me and from living life, from nature, from art…and from playing with other musicians.
How long have you been playing the saxophone?
I started on bassoon in forth grade at a public school and took private lessons ….then in high school took up the saxophone so… about 35-40 years.
What has been your favorite live performance so far?
If you’re talking about seeing a live performance it could be the last time I saw Kenny Garrett at Yoshi’s or Victor Wooten at the Great American Music Hall in SF.
And if you’re talking about my live performance it could be my last gig with Scott Collard, Rick Lotter and Buca Necak at the Beatnik Studios.
Do you like playing with the accompaniment of a band or prefer playing solo?
I do it all but prefer to play with the accompaniment of my band but also enjoy playing with other bands like The Mixx and The Nibblers.
Who is your favorite artist you’ve performed with?
Johnny Mathis who I worked with three months ago or the time I played with Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have also played a lot of great shows with Paul Anka all over the world including Royal Albert Hall, London. I worked for Paul Anka for 25 years.
I see on your website that you teach at Watermelon Music in Davis. How would one sign up to be taught by you?

I have lived & worked in Sacramento since 1993. Back then, a job as Sports Producer at KCRA-TV brought me to California’s capital. During my 15 years there, I learned a great deal about amazing people, places and events that have unique connections to Sacramento. Since 2010, I have done freelance video producing and volunteer work at the Center for Sacramento History. That experience has expanded my appreciation of these interesting people, places and events that have had far-reaching impacts beyond Sacramento.
My passion for history and journalism is what motivated me to combine the two into a creation called “Pages of History.” I take old journalism and turn it into new art by using facsimiles of newspaper articles, print advertisements, press releases, personal papers, telegrams, etc. I enlarge and age them, then display them on painted canvases. The end results are these larger-than-life “Pages of History” that showcase the past. These displays work best in settings that have unique histories themselves— and none is better that the Rail Bridge Cellars Penthouse Lounge at the Elks Tower.
My current exhibit features 45 or so pieces– and spotlights several aspects of vintage Sacramento life, most notably old-time Sacramento Christmas advertisements, Grand Openings of some of the city’s most iconic buildings (including the Elks Tower itself) and a special display showcasing special moments in Sacramento Kings history.
